A Nightwatchman's Notebook: Milford in the 1830s

These are all taking place at 6 pm at No28 on Belper Market Place, Belper DE56 1FZ. Our heritage talks are all available to book via our website: www.belpernorthmill.org.uk/calendar and it's £6 per ticket (plus booking fee).

A notebook kept by the Milford nightwatchmen in the 1830s was handed over to the Belper Historical Society in 2022. Once transcribed, it revealed the identities of the people involved, the places that most often attracted trespassers, and the punishments given to offenders. This talk uses that remarkable document to present a fascinating and highly detailed picture of a lesser-known side of everyday local life.
